3.5.ELASTIC COMPRESSION SOCKS and SLEEVES

After the initial phase of the rehabilitation program and after the extra lymph fluid has been contained the patient should wear elastic compression stockings on the lymphedematous lower limb and compression elastic sleeves and gloves if it is an upper limb with lymphedema. It is best to have them custom made for each patient to ensure a good fit. Their main use is in the long-term treatment of lymphedema, following a period of intensive treatment. It is best to wear them for as many hours as possible, but with attention to indications and contraindications. In addition to socks for the lower limbs and sleeves for the upper limbs there are special gloves for the fingers, socks with pockets for the toes, special bermudas and clothes for swelling of the neck, trunk and genitals (Haslett and Aitken , 2002).
The degree of compression offered by the socks is from I (low compression) to IV (high compression) and is chosen based on the needs of the patient. Based on the way they are sewn, they are divided into circular knit and flat knit. Circular seam stockings and sleeves are thinner and easier to wear, are used in cases of small swelling, but have the disadvantage of not fitting well in all patients and not being stable. Custom socks, usually made using the flat seam method, have a better fit, can cover any anatomical deformity, and do not roll up at the hem. For their selection, many parameters must be taken into account, such as the stage and severity of the condition, the patient's comfort, his lifestyle, psychosocial status, concomitant diseases and the ability to put on and take off the socks or sleeves. The member is measured for ordering when the swelling is minimized, there is no or minimal impression swelling, and the member's shape has improved. Accurate measurement is essential for a good fit, while instructions are provided by the manufacturing companies.

As part of the special physical therapy program, the special elastic sock will be measured and ordered, which will be written in the health booklet and will be supplied by an orthopedic store. The hospital will not supply special elastic stockings and will not be charged for ordering them.
