1.14 Stages of Lymphedema


Stage 0
This is a subclinical condition, where there is no swelling, but the lymph vessels are injured and the lymphatic system is disrupted. Stage 0 can exist for many years.
Stage Ι
It is the early stage of lymphedema, where there is an accumulation of fluid, but it is restored by elevation of the limb. There may be an impression .
Stage ΙΙ
This stage is characterized by impression when the skin is pressed and elevation alone does not reduce the swelling. In the final part of this stage there is fibrosis and reduction of the impression.
Stage ΙΙΙ
This is an advanced stage of lymphedema also called lymphostatic elephantiasis. There is no impression, but changes in the skin such as fat deposition, acanthosis and hypertrophy.
