National Expertise Center of Greece in Autoimmune Liver Diseases (with emphasis in Autoimmune Hepatitis and Primary Biliary Cholangitis)

SERVICES

  • Liver Elastography: is a technique which by the use of ultrasounds (FibroScan) provides a quantitative estimation of liver fibrosis in a non-invasive and painless way. Moreover, sequential examinations reveal the progression, stability or relapse of liver fibrosis. Liver elastography is a free of charge service of the Elastography Unit of the Department of Medicine, General University Hospital of Larissa.
  • Autoantibody detection: detection of non-organ-specific autoantibodies related to autoimmune liver diseases (anti-LKM1, anti-LKM3, anti-LM, anti-LC1, anti-SLA/LP, anti-F-actin SMA, anti-a-actinin, anti-cardiolipin, anti-deamidated gliadin, anti-gp210, anti-sp-100) with multiple techniques developed mainly at the Research Laboratory of Internal Medicine of the University of Thessaly (in-house methods) that CANNOT be performed with standardized techniques anywhere else in Greece. Autoantibody detection is a service provided by the Research Laboratory of Internal Medicine.
  • Liver biopsy: in most cases it takes place under local anesthesia, at the bedside and requires overnight hospitalization.
  • Imaging: abdomen ultrasound, computed tomography of the upper abdomen (4-pase study with the use of iv contrast) and MRI of the liver with the use of liver specific, paramagnetic agents can be performed at the Radiology Department of the General University Hospital of Larissa that is included in the broader multidisciplinary team of the Center (Head Dr. M Vlychou, Professor in Radiology)
